Web3 Gaming is becoming very popular, and games want to sell blockchain based NFTs to their users, however, the purchase checkout experience is complex and fragmented, causing confusion, failed transactions, and >80% drop-offs

To understand the challenges users face when purchasing NFTs in-game, I conducted user interviews with both Web2 and Web3 users. Web2 users struggled with complex onboarding and lacked clarity on costs, while Web3 users wanted flexibility in payment options. Through competitor analysis, I evaluated existing solutions but found none offering a seamless checkout experience. I also investigated forums to uncover common pain points and real user frustrations. Finally, I mapped the user journey, identifying friction points in the purchase flow and highlighting opportunities for a unified checkout experience.


The Approach
The kicker came from another simple insight: During client pitches, I noticed they focused way more on the UI look than on the user flow, leading me to the idea of a customizable design system.




Outcomes

This solution of handling web3 complexities on backend required a timeline extension of 4-6 months, change in architecture and additional uncertainty about its feasibility. I generated buy-in from PM and Business, and worked with them to convince Eng. Additional time taken now will be less than time taken later to change the solution
